Defeated against the Red Army, the pro-tsarist White Army soldiers, aristocrats, and the civilian population were forced to leave Russia as of 1919. One of their first and noteworthy stop was Istanbul. The White Russians, who mostly used Istanbul as a transit city, had a great impact on the social and economic life of the occupied city since their arrival.
